A happy camper is one who can do all the work themselves"

During our 4 years of travel, we've completed several DIY projects to create the perfect living space for our family of 4. Renovating our bunk room was one of our first projects. We wanted to create a space where we could homeschool, do activities, and play games. The first thing I do when planning a renovation is create a budget. How much am I planning to spend? I like saving money by thrifting and sourcing what I need on the local Facebook Marketplace before I head out to the store. Even on the road, I was able to buy and sell on the Facebook Marketplace.

When we purchased the Hideout 318 BR, it came with a large couch in the rear bunk room area. We removed this couch to create a study area for our kids and stored it for later use. Here's a breakdown of what we used and spent on this renovation:

  • Wall Paper: $39 (Home Depot)
  • Metal Baskets: $12 (FB Marketplace for 4)
  • Canvas Storage Totes: $18 for 2 (Amazon)
  • Wood for the table: leftovers from a different project & stain
  • Fabric for window valance: $4.99 yard (Hobby Lobby)
  • Cushions $8 (FB Marketplace for 2)

Total Cost: $81.99

I always say, “A happy camper is one who can do all the work themselves!” Not only do you save money, but you also get exactly what you envisioned. Adding your own personal style doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. You just need a handy husband and some patience. Creating these customized spaces for your family is so important while on the road, so you can optimize the living spaces. We have renovated our RV several times to accommodate our needs and create a home on wheels that we could enjoy and feel comfortable in.

Here are some other projects that we tackled in our Keystone Hideout:

  • Fireplace Renovation: After 3 years of traveling, our fireplace needed love. We repainted it and added shiplap to the wall, brightening up the living area. Total cost: $65.
  • Bedroom Update: Added leftover wallpaper and a bright bed comforter for a homely feel.
  • Bathroom Remodels: Regular remodels were crucial to keeping everything running smoothly.
  • Living Area Transformation: Our favorite area where we spent countless family moments.

We also love decorating our rig for birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries! Living in an RV doesn’t limit any festivities or decorations. It brings so much cheer to our home on wheels. The possibilities are endless!
