Let’s face it—your RV puts in the work. It battles wind, dust, rain, and relentless UV rays, all while hauling you to unforgettable places. A little routine care goes a long way in keeping it road-trip ready and protecting your investment. In this guide, we’ll cover the basics of RV exterior TLC, from wash techniques and waxing to seals, decals, and roof inspections.

Why Regular Exterior Maintenance Matters

  • Prevents damage: Removing grime and checking seals helps stop water intrusion and premature wear.
  • Preserves resale value: A clean, well-cared-for RV makes a better impression if you ever decide to sell or trade.
  • Protects finishes: UV rays and road salt can break down paint, fiberglass, and graphics without proper upkeep.

Washing Your RV the Right Way

  • Use an RV-safe soap to avoid stripping protective finishes.
  • Start from the top and work down—this keeps dirty water from streaking clean surfaces.
  • Use a long-handled soft brush or microfiber mop to reach high spots.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with a microfiber towel to reduce water spots.

Waxing and UV Protection

  • Apply wax or a UV protectant every 3–6 months, especially if your RV is stored outside.
  • Products designed for fiberglass or gel coat surfaces work best—check your owner's manual for guidance.
  • Don’t forget to protect plastic parts, like fender skirts and vents, with UV-blocking sprays.

Inspecting and Maintaining Seals

  • Examine all roof and sidewall seals regularly for cracking, gaps, or wear.
  • Clean around seals with mild soap and water before applying seal conditioner or sealant if needed.
  • Catching small issues early can prevent expensive water damage later.

Caring for Decals, Graphics, and Matte Paint Finishes

  • Hand wash decals with a soft cloth—pressure washers can lift or peel edges.
  • Avoid abrasive or petroleum-based cleaners that can fade vinyl or damage surface finishes.
  • For Keystone RVs with matte paint finishes, be extra careful: Use matte-specific soaps and protectants to avoid adding shine or streaking. Avoid waxing these surfaces—most waxes will create uneven patches or gloss. Always spot test new products in an inconspicuous area.

Matte finishes offer a modern, bold look—and with the right care, they'll stay that way for years. Learn More Now

Roof TLC

  • Clean your RV’s roof at least twice a year (more often if stored under trees or exposed to debris).
  • Use a non-abrasive cleaner compatible with your roof material—rubber, TPO, or fiberglass.
  • Check roof vents, skylights, and AC units while you’re up there.
