Exerpts from RV Lifestyle, Vol.41 #7 Photo and article by Norm Rosen,
We were very impressed with the amount of living space available inside the Cougar XLite 21RBS. This spacious floor plan is achieved by utilizing a ‘Smart Slide‘ that is deeper than you would expect to see in a vehicle of this size. By placing the pop-up U-shaped dinette into the slide-out, Keystone engineers have maximized the footprint available for the ‘Executive Chef‘ L-shaped galley, and they have included a countertop flip-up extension that had to have been suggested by an experienced camper. You can select an optional free-standing dinette to add even more flexibility to your Cougar, or a multi-function sleeper sofa (and use a portable table or individual tray tables for dining).
We have often applauded RV designs that bear the obvious stamp of a design and engineering team that actually camps in their products, and this unit is one of the best examples of a compact and lightweight trailer ideal for a family of four.
Considering the amount of space available in a 21-foot travel trailer, the Cougar earns top marks in all three major areas. The master bedroom is a clever design, with folding doors for privacy, and dual wardrobes that provide a reasonable amount of closet space with relatively easy access to make the bed. The under-bed storage is accessible with very little effort thanks to the lift assist mechanism — you don’t even have to disturb the pillows and throw cushions on the bed.
When it comes to comfort and convenience, the engineers have added several clever touches. There is a laundry chute incorporated into the bedroom wardrobe design, so you can collect your laundry from the exterior pass-through storage compartment. We really like the way the Keystone engineers address the placement of the LCD TV — it is wall mounted where you can see it from the galley, the dinette, or the bedroom.
The living room area of the trailer is spacious, bright, and full-featured. Entertain friends and family with a true home CD/DVD system with speakers and separate zones (12 Volt compatible), and use your MP3 player hookup on stereo. You can also take the party outside thanks to the all-weather exterior speakers.
The rear bathroom is an excellent design, with a neo-angle shower stall fitted with a residential shower surround, and a porcelain residential style toilet with foot pedal flush. The gas/electric water heater is a quick recovery model that we have encountered on some of our long-term test vehicles — it really makes a difference when four people want to take showers in the space of an hour. You can also enjoy the convenience of an exterior shower — ideal for rinsing off the beach sand, and perfect for washing the dog.
The XLite achieves this impressively functional floor plan thanks to the use of a rear door configuration. As you might expect, the entrance features an XL Folding grab handle, a step light, and the patio lighting is excel-lent. Touch a switch to extend the electric awning and you have a home away from home that will turn heads in any campground.
